Tomorrow: Endless Blinding Sunshine sound performance at labotanica/ Closing reception of Tropical Depression
Friday, February 19, 2010, 8pm (free)
(((live drone electronics)))

Endless Blinding Sunshine (Carlos Pozo and Steve Matis) perform for the closing reception of Tropical Depression. Tropical Depression is a four-channel audio installation accompanied by mixed-media collages. The audio piece combines electronics with remixed and distorted music blended to create a submerged, aquatic, ambient environment. The collages are inspired by technical diagrams illustrating the path of hurricanes cutting across the Caribbean towards Texas. There will be prints available for sale. Saturday, February 20, 2010 will be the last to view the exhibition. More

Next: Participate in States of Exchange an interactive exhibition framing collaboration
Opening Reception: Friday, February 26, 2010  6-8pm
Exhibition continues until April 3, 2010
States of Exchange is a participatory “exhibition” at labotanica in which individuals of all creative backgrounds and disciplines,  (visual art, music, dance, literary art, as well as disciplines such as science, architecture, history, etc.) can propose and develop new artistic collaborations. labotanica will mediate the process of collaboration by presenting an evolving installation at labotanica (2316 elgin, Houston, Texas 77004), in which participants’ profiles will be exhibited for potential collaborations; and collaborative works will be developed in the space through conversations, art installations, and performance rehearsals. Completed works will be exhibited or presented in many forms throughout the duration of the “exhibition”.

States of Exchange addresses the need to provide platforms and opportunities for local artists to dialogue, create, and present new works in Houston. It fills the need for artistic incubation in the community, and frames how these artistic collaborations, or “states of exchange” activate us individually and as a community. labotanica will serve as a hub, incubator and facilitator for new artistic collaborations, and new artwork in Houston, Texas, as well as throughout the world.

Individuals interested in presenting, comple Participant Form here or email the following: including a bio, 7 images of your art, a photo of yourself, email & phone, and a sentence or two stating what ways you are open to collaborating. Send to: la (at) labotanica (dot) org. more

Next: The I at labotanica presents Luxuria by Christina Summers
Opening Reception: Friday, February 26, 2010  6-8pm
The I, located inside labotanica, presents Christina Summers' Luxuria, an installation of an orchid garden made with photographs exposing the myth of luxury.   In addition is an interview between Summers and labotanica's Founder Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud discussing the radical nature of the space as a hub for creative and social transformation. The I is the window space located within labotanica's Resource Room that presents an artist's work and an interview on their process.  The I is the convergence between labotanica and the greater community, and the artist and viewer. more

Next: Stage Exchange, a message exchange project between stages of experience by Carrie Schneider
Opening Reception: Friday, February 26, 2010  6-8pm
Also part of States of Exchange is Stage Exchange, a message exchange project facilitated by artist Carrie Schneider. Beginning February 26, labotanica becomes the hub of a message exchange practice that detaches specific individual identity and explores pervasive stages of experience instead.
How it works:
1:1 reciprocity
Find a stage you connect with. Write a message for someone in that stage. Send it to stage exchange. Receive a message to someone in your stage.  viewer. more
